IDA welcomes delegates from American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics
Dentists and dental team members came together for three days of educational and social connection at the Irish Dental Association’s (IDA) Annual Conference this spring.
The conference was a joint event this year, with the organising committee welcoming delegates from the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics (AAFP) for parallel sessions on Friday and Saturday.
Included were presentations from Dr Bob Philpott, on how to get the best results during root canal treatment, Dr Dipesh Parmar, who gave an anterior composite masterclass, and Drs Mairead Browne,
Paul Kielty and Sarah Kate Quinlivan, who facilitated a deep dive into the world of botulinum toxin treatments.
Dr Seamus Sharkey brought the focus to preparation design in fixed prosthodontics, Professors Paul Brady and Dr Catherine Gallagher offered a short refresher course on conscious sedation and Dr Linda Greenwall gave a workshop on whitening and white spot eradication with ICON.
Professor Carl Driscoll was the first speaker at the AAFP session, with the message: ‘Just because we can, doesn’t mean we should’. In an era of information overload, he said it was all the more important that we question everything, look at the strength of the evidence and ensure that all of our dentistry is carried out based on sound principles.
Dr Anne Gunderman’s topic was ‘Digital dentistry in the fourth dimension’, and she took the audience through her experience with state-of-the-art digital scanning, which captures jaw motion on screen in real time and thus enables advanced treatment planning. Presentations continued over the following two days, including from Dr Monik Vasant, on composite artistry, and Dr Mike Gow on managing anxious patients.
Next year’s conference returns to the Lyrath Estate in Kilkenny from May 15-17, 2025.
