A SURE thing for Marie

Third year UCC student picks up annual research award

Marie Donnelly has been named as the recipient of the SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience) award for 2014 within the College of Dentistry at University College Cork (UCC).

The third year BDS will work under the supervision of Dr Eimear Hurley to undertake a study entitled ‘Transfer During Birth Study (TUBS)’.

The purpose of the TUBS study is to examine the bacterial composition of stool and saliva samples obtained from mothers and their babies born in Cork University Maternity Hospital and to establish whether there is a relationship between the microbial floras in their respective digestive tracts.

This year, there were 10 SURE awards available for undergraduates within the College of Medicine and Health: one in the School of Dentistry, five in the School of Medicine, two in the School of Midwifery, and one each in the Schools of Clinical Therapies and Pharmacy.

The awards of up to €2,000 per student are available for a maximum of eight weeks’ research.
